Obituary of Daniel S. Cahill

Daniel Shaun Cahill, at 55 years of age, died of heart complications at Albany Medical Center on Monday, October 4th, 2021. He was a deeply thoughtful, caring man, who valued love, loyalty, and honesty above all.

Daniel was a son and grandson; a brother of five siblings; a husband; a father of twin girls; an uncle to his many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend to many, many people—many of whom gathered together to celebrate his life at a recent memorial service near Albany, New York. 

Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1966, to Deirdre and Robert Cahill, he soon moved to Downers Grove, Illinois, in the Chicago area, where generations of his family grew up. 

Raised for the first four years by Eleanor Handley, his grandmother, he was truly blessed to become as strong and loving towards his children as she was towards him and his siblings.

He was the last of six children—Kathleen, Maureen, Kevin, Bobby, and Sheila. Though he lost his brother Kevin to cancer, he is survived by his three sisters and brother, his nieces and nephews, and his wife and daughters.

Having been raised in the Chicago area, he remained an avid sports fan and a true Cubs fan even as he moved to Houston, Manhattan, and Upstate New York, from all of which places he maintained close relationships with family and friends who were dear to him. 

He married Anne Marie Harrison on September 1st, 1990, and she remains his friend and spouse forever. Daniel and Anne Marie were blessed with twin girls, Eleanor Joy and Faye Marie Cahill, who were born on September 1st, 2010. 

Following high school at Downers Grove South and college at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Daniel studied law at Notre Dame Law School where he made Law Review and became an editor. Then, he went on to work in the admiralty section at Vinson & Elkins in Houston, Texas for five years. Later, he moved to New York to practice securities law with Weil, Gotshal & Manges. After a year at an investment bank, in Albany, as co-general counsel, he founded his own law firm in Saratoga Springs, New York, which developed a good client base and enabled him later to form Cahill/Wink LLP and, then, Cahill Gambino LLP, where he practiced for a total of 15 years. 

Aside from where he grew up, his favorite place to visit was New Orleans, Louisiana. There, he maintained friendships as close as family and became a member of the Krewe of Tucks Mardi Gras organization as well as the Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Club.  

Daniel was known for his wry wit, level-headedness, as well as his capacity for thought and reason at an especially high level. Although his law firm won judgments as high as $22.4 million, his crowning achievement was his two girls, whom he loved more than anyone or anything else in the world.
