In the late seventies I was Dr Zimmerman’s research assistant. I remember fondly those days of sitting in Joe’s office discussing assignments as his small radio softly offered classical music in the background. Not far away was Joe’s trusty IBM Selectric typewriter that facilitated the creation of so much of his wisdom.
I deeply admired Joe. He genuinely cared about his students. In addition to being a top-notch scholar and man of high integrity, he was, to put it simply, a nice guy.
Joe played an instrumental role in my career in public service. What was supposed to be an 18 month stay in Albany to earn an MA degree ultimately turned into 44 years, and counting, of service to New York State. After many years at the New York State Energy Office and the Department of Public Service, I am now teaching at the Rockefeller College. Every day I hope I can live up to Dr Zimmerman’s high standards.
My sincerest condolences to the Zimmerman family.

Dear Deidre and Family:
Please accept my condolences on the passing of your father. Professor Z, as he was known to those of us working with him for the NYS Senate Transportation Committee and the Commission on Critical Transportation Choices in the 1970’s and 1980’s, was famous for his “Z grams,” short memos highlighting new ideas and undertakings throughout the world of transportation and the environment. Those memos, more often than not, sent a staff that included three other Phd’s and seven lawyers to determine whether these ideas and undertakings could be implemented in New York. His intellectual observations and thoughts made us all better public servants.
With warmest regards,
George Weissman

Professor Zimmerman was one of the first faculty I took classes from at SUNY-Albany in the doctoral program. His class was interesting because of the historical perspectives he could give from his own life experiences. He led a long and successful life and he will be missed, but celebrated. God Bless his soul and give him peace.

On behalf of my colleagues at SUNY Press, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Joseph Zimmerman. Joe published sixteen books with SUNY Press and used to hand-deliver his manuscripts to our front desk. Most of our authors are from other universities, so it was a treat to have the opportunity for face-to-face interaction and to build a relationship over time. Always gracious, Joe charmed everyone he worked with, from editorial assistants to production editors, and it was an honor to work with him on so many of his books. His contributions to scholarship were immense, and he will be sorely missed.

I too am very sad to hear of Professor Zimmerman's death but heartened that he had such a long and accomplished life. I took a State and Local Government class with Professor Zimmerman as a sophomore at SUNYA in the fall of 1983. Professor Zimmerman contacted me during the winter break and said that he thought I showed promise and he had obtained a 6-hour/week internship for me with the then Majority Leader of the State Senate, Warren Anderson. That internship led to 2 more stints in the NYS Senate while in college, as well as becoming very close friends with my then-supervisor (whom I visited in Maine in 2021) and then law school. Although it took me 20 years of working in the private section before I landed my dream job in the federal government, I finally made it 12 years ago and thank Professor Zimmerman for setting me on that path and helping to steer me. I still remember the course book he wrote that we read in the class.
I feel badly that I didn't stay in touch with Professor Zimmerman and he likely has no idea where my career and life led but I at least want his family to know that I am one more of the hundreds, if not thousands, of students that Professor Zimmerman impacted for life. I am sorry you lost a loved one.
Warmly, Barbra Varnhagen

My deepest condolences to the family of Joe Z. I had the ultimate good fortune to have been mentored and guided by him as a graduate student at GSPA SUNYA in the late 1960s. As I was preparing to graduate from Boston College, I had decided to seek further education and with an abiding interest in politics and public affairs, GSPA was an obvious option, so I applied. After getting notification that I was accepted, I traveled from Boston to Albany for making arrangement to move there and enroll. Joe was assigned me to assist the transition. He was an enormous help. When I started my studies he helped me get scholarships, loans and internships, without which I would not have afforded my studies. He helped me choose courses and when I decided to work in RFK's ill-fated presidential campaign, he encouraged me to get some real work exposure. He consoled me when Bobby was murdered. He sponsored me so that I was awarded one of three available internships in the office of the President of the New York State Senate. In all, he was the most important influence in my life during the key years when my future direction in life was established. Joe lit the fire that I carried as I went into politics, government and public service. I know my experience was similar to that of countless other students who were gifted with his selfless guidance and friendship. I regret that I never reached out to thank him. So I belatedly say "a million thanks Professor Zimmerman"! Richard Rust, GSPA '69

I was an undergraduate student who took several of Dr. Zimmerman's classes. I found him to be honest, candid, straight forward in his teaching style and always challenged me. He helped me get my first internship in the NYS DOB where I cut my teeth in the wheels of administrative bureaucracy and found it's the political side of governmental operations that would later be my calling.
Twenty years later and into my career I still think back fondly to the lessons taught in class; the course material and occasional life lessons were always insightful. His lessons, sense of humor stuck and fluency in Gaelic stuck with me.
Living in New Hampshire now, I had to laugh when I found his book "The New England Town Meeting" is a work cited by municipal governments here as the premier work on the subject. It was a book so many SUNYA students loathed to read, but today sits at a prominent spot on my bookshelf. I had not known he was a Granite State native, so I'm proud my time at SUNYA kind of comes full circle back to my new home in New Hampshire.
To our friend now gone, I say that "Death is nothing at all, but you have only slipped away into the next room with our Lord in Heaven. For us still here we celebrate your life with love, care and laughter, for we know we'll see you again soon. Until we meet again Dr. Z, enjoy the Eternal Kingdom. Bi beò saorsail."

I was a colleague of Joe at Rockefeller College from 1994 until his retirement. I used to joke with him about the fact that he received his PhD the year I was born! Joe was always kind and supportive. My sincere condolences to his family.

I was a graduate student of Dr. Zimmerman from 1974 to 1980 in political science. He was a great source of support for me as I moved through my doctoral studies at SUNYA. I served as a research assistant for him both at the school and with the federal government. on a grant program He also assisted me in getting outside internships. He provided me with guidance and suggestions as I moved forward in my graduate studies especially when it came to my dissertation. His assistance was focused, targeted and on point. His editorial guidance helped a novice writer as I struggled to convert my research to a cogent and organized dissertation. He was very unassuming and always ready with advice. After I completed my graduate studies he provided me with support as a moved into my professional career. David Rowell, Albany, New York
