Coach "Fitz" was my freshman football coach at Bethlehem Central Junior High in 1960. It was my first experience in organized sports and I loved it. Coach Fitz's enthusiasm for the sport made it really fun. I went on to play football at the high school and later in college at the US Coast Guard Academy. I also had him as a PE instructor as a freshman and he was teaching basic wrestling. He was using me as his opponent to demonstrate some moves. We demonstrated the moves and then I followed up with some other moves he had taught us, and much to the glee of the class I was able to put him in a pinning position. I think he was just rewarding me for paying attention. The experience did make me think maybe I could be a wrestler. I went on to wrestle at the hight school and also at the Coast Guard Academy. He was a great coach and mentor with a wonderful temperament for working with athletes. It made me sad to hear of his passing. Please accept my most sincere condolences.
