Steve was a wonderful man. He was someone I always looked up to. One of my first memories of Steve was sitting at Aunt Shirley and Uncle Ragner's home as he showed us a slide show from his service in Vietnam. I was in awe how he survived that. He was a very modest man. Always very friendly and could carry on a conversation with anyone. He was such a successful and kind man. He was a gentle soul. I admired him a lot. I always looked forward to seeing him at the family reunions.

Looking at what Steve Carlson did for his community from our vantage point more than a quarter of a century later, I credit him most of all for his courage and wisdom in leading the city through the bitter process of closing publicly funded Jamestown General Hospital.
The hospital needed to be closed. But it cost Steve his job as mayor and I would guess it probably cost him many friends, too. Ultimately he left his beloved hometown to make a life elsewhere.
The point is, Steve Carlson did the right thing for his community. He paid a huge price personally and professionally for it, but he did the right thing. What an extraordinary legacy for the people of the city of Jamestown and all of Chautauqua County to nurture and emulate.

Judy and family -
You are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Steve was a wonderful mayor and moved Jamestown and Chautauqua County forward during his tenure. He didn't play politics but worked for the common good of our community.
