Obituary of Joan Lawrie Lierheimer

SLINGERLANDS - Joan Lawrie Haynes Lierheimer, 87, of Slingerlands and formerly of Delmar, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017. Born on March 24, 1930 in Greenville, PA, she was the only child of Margaret Lawrie and George Ezra Haynes. She spent much of her youth in Rensselaer, NY and graduated from Van Rensselaer High School. She received her BS Degree from the State University College at Oneonta and her MS degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Early in her career she taught elementary school in Saugerties and East Greenbush, NY. She is survived by her son, Paul Lierheimer and his wife Kimberley, Tucson, AZ and her daughter, Margaret McIntire and husband Travis, Tampa, FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Taylor, Drew, Christopher, Faith, Abigail, Rachael and Laine whom she adored. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Paul Lierheimer and two children, Amy Lynn and Christopher George. Lawrie was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, for many years. She was a dedicated PEO sister and an unfailing champion for women and children of all ages. During her second career she was employed by Albany Business College and later by the NYS Department of Education. Lawrie was an avid reader and bridge player, and was often seen with the New York Times cross-word puzzle in hand. Lawrie's main focus was her love of family and friends and commitment to life-long learning. She personified unconditional love, true faith, tolerance and perseverance throughout her life; her quiet and gracious presence will truly be missed by many. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on State Street in Albany in the spring.
