Jeff Magnuson and Fred first meet at the Stony Brook School in the Fall of 1959. Both were under-achievers in public school and Jeff continues on that path at Stony Brook as well. They become roommates in the fall of 1960, their senior year. A certain amount of mahem ensues but graduation is achieved. A common interest in things mechanical bond the two for the rest of their lives. Jeff and his future wife Barbara dance at Fred and Kathleen's wedding in June and the situation is reversed in August, two couples embarking on life time relationships. This was the summer of 1967. Fred and Jeff reunite in the 90's at a vintage race car event in New Hampshire. Fred becomes official chef and technical consultant as the Blueberry Hill Racing Team emerges on the vintage power raceboat scene in ernest. Various events in New York and Michigan bring Fred, Jeff and a dozen others together for weekends of privileged boating activities. Fred provides multiple meals for the gang who fully appreciate that Fred picks up the bill. Vintage raceboat gatherings will never be the same without Fred and his "crazy" sneakers inviting all to come to his coach for hot dogs.

Anyone who knew Fred will appreciate this story. I sent it around to the office yesterday after we heard the news.
About 10 years ago, I walked out of the main building at the law firm in Albany to go back to my office in the carriage house when I saw Fred lying on his back, in his suit, halfway underneath my car. I stopped and waited until he got up, and then asked him what he was doing under there. "What are you doing now?" was his cryptic reply. I didn't quite know what to say, and he apparently took my silence to mean I had time to spare, so he told me to get my keys and meet him in the parking lot. When I asked why, he just walked back into the main building without responding. I got my keys and found Fred already in his car, ready to pull out. "Follow me," was all he said before leaving. I did.
We drove through downtown Albany and he stopped on Pearl Street in Menands at Terry-Haggerty Tires. Without waiting for me, he walked into the store, where he was greeted like royalty, which was the case in many local automotive dealerships and stores in Albany. I eventually caught up with him, and the mysterious reason for our trip was finally revealed. Fred told the salesman there was a car outside (mine) that needed 4 new tires. I nearly passed out in the store, and could only whisper to Fred that I really couldn't afford new tires. At the time, I was driving between our Albany and Long Island offices every month, and Fred drilled me with a stern gaze and told me in no uncertain terms that I couldn't afford NOT to get new tires. He talked the salesman into significantly dropping the price (don't ask me how), and I got the tires.
Those of us in the law firm who knew Fred for many years are now chuckling and saying, "Yup, that was Fred." His love of all things automotive was legendary. Last Tuesday morning I had a blowout on the Thruway on my way to our Poughkeepsie office. AAA came and installed my spare "donut," but the mechanic told me I should replace my tire that day. The result was 4 new tires, and the salesman was able to prove to me beyond the shadow of a doubt that the purchase was not only necessary, but critical. I can't help but think that the blowout never would have happened had Fred been on patrol in the 9 Thurlow parking lot these past few months. He would have noticed the state of my deteriorating tires and we would have had another "point to point" (one of Fred's expressions) to Terry-Haggerty long ago!
Smart, funny, infuriating, charming and kind are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of Fred. It was my privilege to know and work with him these past 36 years.
